good places to sell handmade earrings?
I make very unique handmade earrings and have a website but am wondering where I can advertise and other ways I may be able to market my stuff. Ebay isn't an option for me but would like some other ideas you may have on how to market my business. I have posted on yahoo groups and craigslist so far.
How many pairs are you producing? If you're talking 15-20 pairs a week, a couple of hours at the local flea market is probably all you'll need. If you're talking 50 or more, you can try advertising in your local news papers and trader magazines - it's pretty inexpensive, if you're just doing a classified ad.
For a classified ad, since you don't have a lot of space, you probably want to direct shoppers to your website for more information and pictures (if you don't have a website, get one). You can create a display ad for local magazines if you want, but you'll need an awful lot of volume to make something like that pay.
If you go the retail route (such as selling at a flea market), there are some things you can do to speed up sales:
1) Get a big, attractive display for your jewelry. Then, only put out a few pieces at a time, arranged randomly over your display. The impression you want to give is that you're running out, and if someone who's interested doesn't buy now, they may be out of luck.
2) Put up a sign extolling the virtues of your jewelry, and add the magic words "While supplies last". Again, you are going for the exclusivity angle here.
To make your future selling efforts easier, get a name and address from everyone you can who buys from you. Then, about once a month, send out a postcard (full color, with a picture of some of your better new pieces) to these folks, letting them know you have more items available, and you've set aside a pair "just for you".
Anyone who doesn't buy another pair in six months should probably be put in your "inactive" file. Everyone who does buy from one of your mailings should be treated like the golden nugget they are. These ones should be getting letters and cards from you on a regular basis. Send them birthday cards. Remind them when Mother's day or Grandparent's day is coming up, and that your earrings make the perfect gift. Create contests with some of your jewelry as prizes, and invite them to join (while providing them the opportunity to buy some more at the same time, of course).
