Haunting the Paris Catacombs by Peter Merifield
Can you believe that Paris has made a tourist attraction out of a crypt? I've always been fascinated by the macabre and all things spooky. An avid horror-movie watcher, lover of Halloween, and self-proclaimed Grey's Anatomy expert, the human-skeletal body has always fascinated me. What's more, the collection of bones and skulls contained within Paris' famed ossuary are one of the largest collections in the world.
Housed within a renovated section of Paris' stone mines on the outskirts of the city, the catacombs were born out of a great need to rid the city of parish cemeteries. Spilling to the point of capacity, the clergy would exhume bones which had had substantial time to rest and rot. Gross, huh? Without a creative way to deal with the untenable burial practices happening within the city, a series of abandoned stone quarries presented itself as an unlikely sepulture to house the dead. In 1786, a mass exhumation and transfer of all the dead to the underground crypt began and was continued for nearly a century.
As much as I love the history of the Paris Catacombs, what I really admire is the initiative of Louis-tienne Hricart de Thury who decided in 1810 to turn the site into a tourist attraction on par with any great mausoleum in the world. What a genius! He must have known people like me would dream about visit the underground tomb and examine a series of bones. And, did you know Victor Hugo researched the catacomb for his famous work, Les Misrables? Crazy, huh?
Well I've booked myself a nice room at the hotel Orly and cannot wait to get to the catacombs. A short distance from mine and other Orly hotels, the site is conveniently located at Denfert Rochereau on the RER B line. So excited to get freaked out by the skeletons of the Paris Catacombs!
