Grape Muscat by Manoj Mudgel
Muscat grape has been involved in wine making from the ancient times. Even though it was first found in a Greek vineyard, an Arab world name got somehow attached to it. Romans brought it into France during their period of dominance. From France it was taken to Germany and Russia. Egyptians took Muscat grape cuttings off to Africa. Europeans trading with Egypt took with them Muscat grape cuttings to their home countries. In the eighteenth century it was introduced into Australia as well. Settlers from Italy and Spain spread Muscat grapes into America as well.
Muscat grape is said to be the oldest variety to have been used for wine making. Now there is two hundred varieties like Muscat Blanc, Moscato giallo, Muscat of Alexandria, Muscat ottonel, Muscat Hamburg, and orange Muscat. Muscat grape and the wine produced from it have a wonderful and unique property. The aroma of the fruit stays intact even after the wine from it has been made. Its strong aroma won many wide acclaims over time. Wine enthusiasts called it as the grape (Muscat) that attracts bees. Its musky nature intrigued the French and termed it as musque. The Muscat grape has a robust growth and has characteristic dark green color on its leaves. It does not yield as much fruits as any other variety. The grape (Muscat) bunches are not very large, and appears cylindrical and pretty long. The color of its grapes may vary from white to black with its hallmark flavor intact in any variety. The Muscat grapes of the Australian variety are first light green in color and as they mature they slowly turn to golden yellow color with a hint of red. As the fruit has a pretty short maturity period it is left on the vine where it slowly shrinks and falls down. Now this fallen grape has abundant quantities of natural sugar in it and that makes it the ideal condition for starting the wine making process.
A whole array of wines are available that have used Muscat grape. The sweet but powerful Australian variety, the sweet Asti Spumante from Italy, and the Constantia from the South African vineyards are loved by the wine enthusiasts all over the world. The Latin American countries like Peru and Chile also have their own wine made from that grape (Muscat), and termed it as the pisco. The name comes from the vineyard heartland of pisco, which produces the white variety of wonderful Muscat grape. Greece comes out with a brandy made from Muscat grape and France produces wine from this fruit with a unique orange flavor that is very characteristic of the French. Another French wine is a bright white variety made with a fruity aroma.
A brightly sparkling variety of wine produced in Italy uses crushed Muscat grapes and their juice to warm up to a degree which is a closely held secret before the fermentation process. The ferment is kept in airtight tanks to trap carbon dioxide up to the time till the desired level of alcohol and sugar is reached in the beverage. After chilling and bottling the wine is allowed to mature in the bottle.
