The first complete concept of a tablet computer was the DynaBook, conceptualised by Alan Kay in the late 1960s and early 1970s in his article "A Personal Computer for Children of All Ages" (much more information about the DynaBook here). The DynaBook was not just a tablet form-factor computer long before even the laptop appeared on the scene - Kay also described several ideas that would become commonplace only decades later.
The DynaBook was to be a tablet-style computer aimed at learning and gathering information. Kay envisioned that DynaBooks could connect wirelessly to centralised information storages, and could "abstract" information from those storages. It was about the size of a notepad, with a hardware keyboard at the bottom, and a screen at the top (using "liquid crystal", a brand-new technology back then). It could also play audio files, record voice memos, and much, much more.
So far, it sounds like a tablet, but you are all wondering where the stylus comes in. Apart from printing the word "stylus" in one the illustrations, there's no further mention of it in the article. In fact Kay takes it all a few steps further: he basically describes a multitouch display. In 1972. That's almost 40 years ago.
Description of the Tablet PC
A Tablet PC is a portable computing device which looks much like a detached screen from a conventional notebook computer, or perhaps a hand-held computer that's been scaled up.
As a quasi-hybrid of laptop and palmtop computers, the Tablet PC owes much to those earlier technologies. However, one of the key advances that made the Tablet PC possible is the development of ultra-low power microprocessor chips by companies such as Transmeta and Intel. Another standard feature of the Tablet PC, handwriting recognition, first made its appearance in the Apple Newton palmtop computer.
Unlike a notebook (but like a palmtop) the normal way of entering data in a Tablet PC is with a stylus rather than a keyboard. While most models do offer keyboards (integrated in the so-called "convertible" models and separate in the so-called "slate" models), the Tablet PC is designed to use the stylus for most routine tasks. The Tablet PC generally offers some kind of handwriting recognition, and uses modified versions of popular applications that are designed for stylus input. The user interacts with the computer by drawing directly on the screen with the stylus.

Tablet PCs are expensive, more so than notebooks of the same processing power.
Not all software is Tablet-aware. If the instructor uses specialized software in instruction, he or she may be forced to use a keyboard and mouse (and carrry them, if the Tablet is a slate model).
Tablet PCs can be difficult to read under some lighting conditions (some fluorescent lights or bright sunlight). This drawback is shared with many notebook computers.
Though highly portable, battery powered, and equipped with wireless networking, Tablet PCs are still tethered to a projector for large group presentations (see Suggestions for Further Study, below, for a possible workaround for this problem).
