Pharmaceutical packaging- The back bone of Pharmacy industry by howard flukin
One of the most important considerations in any Pharmaceutical packaging is to make it resistant to the ravages of nature and contamination. Most pharmaceutical companies face problem in this section of the business process. The pharmaceutical company is directly involved in the pharmaceutical manufacturing process till the product exits the gates of the factory and the concern to protect the pharmaceutical product shifts to the Pharmaceutical packaging industry.
The last few years has seen the introduction of a number of life saving drugs and the primary concern of every pharmaceutical is to use the primary packaging materials which are chemically inert or are compatible with the chemical constituents of the products which are being packaged. The primary concern of any Pharmaceutical packaging is to insulate the products from the effects of the atmosphere as well as to ensure that the packaging material does not react with components of the products. The Pharmaceutical packaging material must also be sturdy to ensure that the product packaging does not rupture or tear with the rigors of transportation and storage.
Before picking up a particular packaging material one must have intimate knowledge about the physical and chemical properties of packaging material and the packaged products. A very good example of this is Protein supplement which is packaged in a glass bottle. Many vitamins and minerals are also added in traces in the protein supplement. What if these traces of minerals interact with the glass molecules of the bottle? The person will be deprived of the trace element. Sometimes I feel that the tag of trace elements must be removed. Even if they are required by our body in traces does not diminish their importance or the gravity of the diseases caused by their deficiency. Hence most of the big multinationals have discarded glass for CZâ" Resin which is a cyclic olefin polymer, and very inert and less likely to interact with the pharmaceutical products.
Another very common occurrence is the interaction of Sulfur which is the component in many rubber elastomeric formulations with the pharmaceutical products. One more factor which the Pharmaceutical packaging has to deal with is how the product is going to be used in the end. Take for example the vial filled with an antibiotic powder. The company which is going to package the powder must know if a multi dose needle or a disposable needle is going to be used to extract the antibiotic powder. Some vials contain solutions which can be used directly on the patient whereas there are some vials which contain components which must be reconstituted with distilled water before it can be given to the patients. All these are aspects which need to be taken care of.
Therefore it must be understood that the stability and the integrity of chemical composition of the product depends entirely on the packaging material for a particular instance. There is no such Ideal and completely inert substance which can be used to pack any object of any constituency. The experience and knowledge of the materials of the Pharmaceutical packaging company is what determines the success of any pharmaceutical product.
For any pharmacy product the job is only half done in the factory where it is produced. The rest half is borne by the Pharmaceutical packaging process.

Free disposable needles to drug addicts?
should there be free disposable needles to drug addicts?
why or why not?
I am a diabetic and I hate paying for needles but still I would rather drug addicts get free disposable ones so they wont share them. Sharing causes diseases to spread.
