The Florida Gators are in the NCAA Tournament. The debate over UF’s
credentials is over. Now, the focus shifts to another question.
Can 10th-seeded Florida make any noise?
In the interest of full disclosure, I will confess that I have BYU beating the
Gators in my bracket. But, I grow less sure of the pick as Thursday
approaches.
Why? Because the pressure is off in Gainesville.
Remember how loose the UF football team played in the Sugar Bowl once the
pressure to be perfect was gone? I’m not implying that Florida’s hoops team is
near the caliber of the football squad, but pressure can be crippling.
Billy Donovan and his players have had an NIT anvil on their back for two
years. The fear of a third consecutive NIT appearance obviously caused the
team to play tight at critical times in the past two weeks. Senior Dan Werner
clearly has been pressing all season. Now, he and his teammates can relax.
Now, the Gators can just play. The season is a success even if No. 7 seed BYU
butchers Florida in Oklahoma City.
I’m not saying UF will beat the Cougars.
But, I would be surprised ...
